Learning about survival during Science in Our Lives, Mrs. Kristine Burmeister’s class builds a quinzee. They built it as a survival tool in the wilderness in winter. It allows people to keep themselves warm in case they were lost in the woods in winter or needed shelter to stay overnight in the wilderness by giving insulation and a wind break. It was built by piling snow in a mound about 6 feet high. Afterwards, students stuck sticks in the snow to make sure they kept the appropriate distance for insulation (and didn’t break through the walls). Then they hollowed out the quinzee from the bottom away from the wind. The photo shows a student inching his way into the hole.
