2008 Summer Reading

Dear Parents and Students,

Summer is here! The CHS English department is excited to announce our summer reading program. The purpose of our summer reading program for Charlevoix High School students is to promote continuous reading habits, to encourage reading for pleasure, and to establish a springboard for class discussion in the fall. Our goal is to develop independent readers who will continue lifelong reading habits because they find personal value in reading and sharing good books. We hope you will enjoy the books we’ve selected for your particular class.

Recognizing the interest of parents in their child’s reading development, we encourage parents to nurture that development and to make recommendations to their children throughout the year. We also encourage parents to read along with their child and have discussions about the story.

It is proven fact that reading promotes and fosters educational growth, and the more kids see parents reading and enjoying books, the more they will too.

Students will be required to read TWO books during the summer. Each book criteria is explained below:

Book One:
 Book one is an assigned book that will be passed out to students before June 4th (list by class is below).
 Guided reading questions will be given to students when books are distributed. While these do not have to be completed in written form, they can act as a guide to determine the importance of the material. Students should peruse them and be ready to answer them the first day of school. These questions can also be obtained at www.rayder.net/chs under the “Summer Reading” link. Please note there are different questions for each of the assigned books.
 Class discussions and assessments on the first day of school will focus on this text.

Book Two:
 Book two is to be selected by the student from the list provided by the English Department. Students will receive the book list prior to summer break. The book list can also be obtained at www.rayder.net/chs under the “Summer Reading” link.
 A small written assignment to accompany the second book will be given to students prior to summer break. These assignments can also be obtained at www.rayder.net/chs under the “Summer Reading” link. Please note that there are different assignments for each class.
 Assignments for book two are due on the first day of class in the fall.

English II: Fahrenheit 451by Ray Bradbury
English III: A Separate Peace by John Knowles
Honor’s English: Death of a Salesman by Arthur Miller
English IV: Nothing but the Truth by Avi
AP Literature & Composition: The Catcher in the Rye by JD Salinger
